SKYNeX: the prototype flies. Do the claims?

Ravi Tamta deserves credit for getting a human-carrying multicopter into controlled flight. The next milestone is not another adjective. It is a flight log.

Bottom line: the video supports a real engineering achievement: a person is visibly carried in a VTOL multicopter during short, controlled flight segments. It does not establish a 40-km mission, breakthrough performance, airworthiness certification, or a new aircraft category.

I found no publicly searchable DGCA certificate naming HAPIDA/SKYNeX; absence from a web search is not proof that no permission exists.
Useful for Uttarakhand PLAUSIBLE MISSION VTOL can bypass winding roads, so the mission idea is sensible. Utility is still unproven until payload, density-altitude performance, wind envelope, reserve energy, dispatch reliability and emergency landing capability are demonstrated.

The strongest reality check is Indian, not foreign

In July 2022, the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau reported the demonstration of Varuna—an indigenous autonomous multicopter drone capable of carrying a passenger. That does not diminish Ravi Tamta’s build. It simply means the serious innovation question is:

What does SKYNeX do better—cheaper, lighter, safer, longer, higher, simpler or more locally maintainable?

For perspective, Jetson publishes basic figures for its single-seat Jetson ONE: eight motors, roughly 20 minutes of flight time, 102 km/h software-limited top speed, a 95 kg maximum pilot weight, motor-out capability, redundant batteries and a ballistic parachute. These are manufacturer claims, but they show the minimum level of quantitative disclosure expected when a prototype becomes a product story.

DGCA's bar is not “it hovered”

India already has airworthiness criteria specifically for pilot-on-board electric VTOL-capable aircraft up to 5,700 kg. DGCA asks applicants to define operational context, payload and performance, perform a system safety analysis, demonstrate performance across altitude/temperature, and account for a critical change of thrust.

Most importantly, the criteria call for continued safe flight and landing after a critical thrust change, and a controlled emergency landing when commanded thrust can no longer be provided. That is where a viral prototype becomes aerospace.

Then publish the hard part separately: motor-out, battery-segment-out, flight-controller fault, emergency-landing and wind-envelope tests—plus the exact DGCA permission/certification status.

A constructive ask to the Uttarakhand government

Do not stop at congratulating Ravi. Fund an independent, instrumented flight-test campaign under the appropriate regulatory framework. Publish the raw performance envelope and failure-test summary. If the numbers are ordinary, he still built a flying prototype. If the numbers are exceptional, India may have something genuinely important.

Celebrate the maker. Test the machine.
The next milestone isn’t another garland. It’s a data logger.
